Gastroenterologists or G.I. doctors are medical specialists who have extensive training in disease of the digestive tract. Their course of study includes the intestinal tract – the small and large bowel or colon, the liver, gallbladder and pancreas and diseases that affect these organs such as inflammation, infection, cancerous and precancerous tumors, and motor disease.
Although other doctors such as Family Physicians, Internists and Surgeons may perform endoscopies, a gastroenterologist has received extensive training in endoscopy. Endoscopy is the use of small color video cameras to diagnose and treat diseases without the need for surgical incision. In the case of colonoscopy, these instruments may not only detect cancer at an early and easily treatable stage, but may actually prevent cancer from developing by removing precancerous growths without formal surgery
